Schneckenburger Elementary School’s ongoing literacy based service learning experience “Students are All EARS (Excited About Reading and Sharing)”took place on Thursday, December 14th. After extensive preparation, further development of reading and questioning strategies, and pre-reflection, the second grade students made their first visit to their preschool buddies at the Causeway Head Start Center. Their field experience, which involves learning, reading, and sharing with preschool students, allows the second graders to help the preschool students develop a love of literacy and provide an exciting opportunity to spend time together in the spirit of service. The second grade students enjoyed reading fiction and nonfiction books, engaging in meaningful discussions, and sharing healthy snacks with the preschoolers. This is just one important component of an exciting and engaging year of learning, service, and reflection. The field experience truly was a wonderful service learning event and we look forward to continuing with our service learning experience by reflecting on our experience, improving our reading strategies, and using our skills to continue to help our community during this school year!
