The Lemonade Stand project was part of the 1st grade economics unit. The unit began with the students learning about consumers, producers, supply, demand, profits and loss. The first graders then researched the cost of the lemonade, decided on a price, made posters and advertised during the school morning announcements the sale of different flavored lemonades. Each of the three first grade classes manufactured their own flavor. On Friday, May 12th, during the faculty lunches they sold cups of lemonade to the faculty only. While they did not sell out, the students were able to calculate their profit or loss. The unit ended with the students writing about their experience. The students now have a better understanding of the cost of the things they want and what is involved in developing and selling a product. It was a wonderful unit. They will use their profits for an end of the year party.
